Air pollution long has been creating problems for areas far away from the pollution's source. When I was working in Wyoming for The Associated Press back in the 1980s we'd often write about reports that found pollution in the Wind River Range, a gorgeous set of mountains far removed from urban and industrial areas.
Well, today there's news that Voyageurs National Park is being contaminated by mercury drifting into the park from far away. According to a story at Environmental Science and Technology Online, fish in Voyageurs have been found to have some of the highest mercury concentrations detected in Minnesota's fisheries.
No word on the possible source of the mercury, or what might be done to remediate it.
