How Good is the Cross-Country Skiing at Acadia National Park?

Share

Want in on a secret? Acadia National Park is not merely a three-season park. Indeed, winter can be quite wonderful in this maritime setting, as storms can coat Mount Desert Island with a layer of snow thick enough for cross-country skiing

Why, just the other day, on January 14th, the park received 10 inches of snow, a nice-sized dump that has covered most, if not all, of the bare spots along the carriage paths. There are seven routes in the park that are groomed for skiing by volunteers from the Acadia Winter Trails Association, a committee of Friends of Acadia.

Of course, some of that "grooming" simply involves skiers going out and breaking trail through the fresh snow. Still, that's often all you need for classic skiing.

According to park officials, on Tuesday the 15th three of those seven routes were either groomed with a snowmobile-pulled sled or by skiers.
