One of the most picturesque campgrounds at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is going to close for the season next week so crews can get to work rebuilding the three-mile road that leads to the area.
With just eight campsites, the Little Beaver Lake Campground offers some nice solitude in a great setting. There's Little Beaver Lake, of course, as well as Beaver Lake, and then the big one, Lake Superior.
Beginning Tuesday, though, the area will be closed to all traffic and campers so the road work can get under way. The work is necessary to realign the road to alleviate safety concerns along curves and steep embankments, according to lakeshore officials.
The work will be completed by late fall so that the campground and road can re-open as scheduled in May 2011.
"We regret this inconvenience, and encourage autumn campers to plan their stay at another area campground," said Chris Case, the lakeshore's maintenance chief. "Hurricane River and Twelvemile Beach Campgrounds will continue to be open until November 1, although 3.4 miles of Alger County Road H-58 remain closed between the campgrounds.
"In addition, several Michigan State Forest campgrounds are located nearby and offer camping experience similar to Little Beaver Lake," Chief Case added.
