If you'd enjoy a concert of seafaring songs presented aboard an 1886 sailing ship, there's a fine opportunity coming up on November 16 at San Francisco National Maritime National Historical Park. The event will be the final one for the 25th annual Sea Music Concert Series at the park, and will feature acclaimed solo performers John Roberts and Debra Cowan.

The pair has teamed up for this concert to present a program of old and new songs of seafarers and seafaring communities; during the program, they'll sing traditional and contemporary songs from across the English-speaking world.

John Roberts, accompanying on concertina, has a longstanding reputation as one of the finest performers to emerge from England’s folk music revival. Debra Cowan, an East Coast singer and guitar player originally from California, brings a fine voice, expert guitar accompaniment, and a deep knowledge of traditional American songs to every performance. Together they present a compelling program, with fine musicianship, warmth, and humor.

The music will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, and it would be hard to find a more appropriate setting than the Historic Ship Balclutha, which is tied up at the Hyde Street Pier on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Balclutha is a three-masted, steel-hulled, square-rigged ship built to carry a variety of cargo all over the world. Launched in 1886 by the Charles Connell and Company shipyard near Glasgow, Scotland, the ship carried goods around Cape Horn (the tip of South America) 17 times.

Ticket prices for the concert are $14 general admission, $12 for members of the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association, which is sponsoring the event. You can phone 415-561-6662 ext. 21 for ticket information or send an e-mail to [email protected].
