Skyline Drive To Fully Reopen Friday Evening In Shenandoah National Park

The entire 105 miles of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia was to reopen Friday evening as rains have knocked down the Rocky MTN Fire, officials said. However, a short stretch of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail remained closed.

The wildfire, spotted April 16, had burned close to 10,400 acres. As of Friday morning it was 90 percent contained, according to the daily fire briefing. Most fire crews were demobilizing Friday and heading home, while a smaller contingent was to remain to mop up.

The Appalachian Trail was closed from Doyles River Overlook, milepost 82, to Powell Gap, milepost 70. 

The exact cause of the fire remained unknown, though it was believed to have been human caused.
