Share

A Georgia woman who got out of her car to look at a snake along Foothills Parkway in Great Smoky Mountains National Park was killed when she was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Park officials said Shirley Jean Alexander Clifton, 64, of Woodstock, had gotten out of the passenger side of her car shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday when she was hit near Chilhowee Lake.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol Critical Incident Response Team responded to assist rangers with the accident investigation, which is ongoing. At this time, there is no indication that the driver of the vehicle striking Clifton was at fault, park officials said.
