Watershed Restoration Scheduled For Cuyahoga Valley National Park

A contract has been signed for ecosystem restoration in the Stanford Run Watershed at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded the $425,000 contract to Ryba Marine Construction Co., for the project near Peninsula, Ohio. An upgraded culvert is to be installed to allow Stanford Run to flow under the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, allowing this tributary to re-connect to the Cuyahoga River.

“This section of Stanford Run has seen a large build-up of sedimentation over many years,” said Russ Brandenburg, USACE Buffalo District project manager. “Reconnecting this tributary to the Cuyahoga River is important because current stream conditions include stagnant flow and ponding, and this project will help to alleviate those conditions.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided funds for this project through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and the project has been closely coordinated with Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

“USACE has helped us finally bring this project to completion after years of planning by the national park,” said acting Superintendent Paul Stoehr. “Our collaboration with USACE Buffalo District over the last two years has been extremely productive and this project is an important step toward the Park’s strategic vision to improve condition of the Cuyahoga River watershed.”

The project is scheduled to be completed by October 2019.
