Fire ecology -- the impacts of wildfire, and how landscapes recover -- are the focus of a photography exhibit at to Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in California.

The California Fire and Recovery Photography Exhibit currently is on dispaly at the Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center. On Saturday, February 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., National Park Service fire ecologist Marti Witter will discuss fire ecology in the region.

In the aftermath of any fire, the recovery process begins. This can include plants, referred to as “fire followers,” that are rarely ever seen except as the result of a fire. In this photo exhibition, visitors will observe the raw and heartbreaking side of fire, the rare fire followers, and the regrowth and transformation of fire recovery.

The region has suffered several destructive wildfires in recent years and the most devastating was the Woolsey Fire that started on November 8, 2018, and destroyed 88 percent of federal park land.

The event and parking is free. For more information, please call the Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center at 805-370-2301. The address is 26876 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA  91302.
