A teenager died after scrambling up a hillside near Eden Falls Cave and falling 20 feet/NPS file

A 16-year-old Missouri boy lost his footing and died in a fall while hiking near Eden Falls Cave at Buffalo National River in Arkansas.

A park release said the teen left the established trail near the cave on Saturday while hiking with a large group from his church, scrambled up the hillside near the cave entrance, lost his footing and fell approximately 20 feet, sustaining traumatic head and spinal injuries.

Witnesses conducted CPR and rendered first aid until emergency personnel arrived on scene. The teen was unresponsive when National Park Service rangers and paramedics arrived.

The terrain in Buffalo National River can be rugged and steep. Off-trail travel is often dangerous, and park staff asks visitors to please stay on established trails to avoid injury.
