New Boardwalk Will Take You To Cape Lookout Lighthouse

The boardwalk that leads to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse is being replaced this winter/NPS

The stretch of boardwalk that leads you to the lighthouse and keeper's quarters at Cape Lookout National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is currently being replaced with weather-resistant materials, a process that is limiting access to the area, especially for those with mobility issues, a release from the seashore says.

The boardwalk winds through a pine forest and keeps you from trampling the sand and grasses along the forest floor. Along with guiding you to the lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters Museum, the boardwalk takes you to the Light Station Visitor Center.

This construction project is being tackled during the seashore's slowest visitation season. However, those who do visit the lighthouse this winter will be impacted. Anyone visiting the area while construction is underway should exercise caution and avoid work crews and heavy equipment, the park release said.

While an exact date of completion is not known, it is expected that the new boardwalk will be ready no later than April 1, 2024.
