Celebrate Earth Day With A Trip To Florida Bay And Everglades National Park

Celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, with a day of fun at Florida Bay. NPS photo.

If you're in south Florida later this month, you'll be able to celebrate Earth Day with a paddling trip to Florida Bay or a hike. You also can applaud the creation of a private fund set up to benefit the bay.

Hosted by the National Parks Conservation Association and the South Florida National Parks Trust, the day of activities will be family friendly. Here's the schedule:

Thursday, April 22, 2010

10 a.m.: Gates open to the public to celebrate Earth Day, Eco-Mariner.org and the release of the Florida Bay Stewardship Fund.

10 a.m. --12 p.m.: Guided boat and kayak tours of Florida Bay, hammock tours, educational booths and Eco-Mariner course are offered

12 Noon-12:30 p.m.: Florida Bay Stewardship Fund Press Conference: South Florida National Parks Trust and National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) announce the launch of a stewardship fund for Florida Bay in partnership with Everglades National Park.

12:30-1 p.m.: Eco-Mariner Birthday celebration. Free Cake for all!

1-3 p.m.: Guided boat and kayak tours of Florida Bay, hammock tours, educational booths and Eco-Mariner course are offered.

The fine print: All participants must sign up for activities at the Russell Cottage. Boat and kayak tours depart from the Main House Dock. Space is limited and participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Refreshments will be available.
