If you're heading to Glacier National Park, you'll be glad to know the Going-to-the-Sun Road is now open end-to-end.

In case you're wondering, last year the road wasn't fully cleared of snow until July 2. For trivia buffs, the latest opening on record is July 10, 1943, when the snow was allowed to melt out. The earliest Logan Pass opening to motorized traffic occurred on May 16, 1987.

All that said, it will not all be smooth sailing this summer as you head from West Glacier to St. Mary, or vice versa, due to ongoing construction along the scenic 50-mile-long highway.

Here's how the park explains things:

The Sun Road project received $27.6 million in federal stimulus money to rebuild from Big Bend to Logan Pass. Remaining funds will be applied to the next phase of work in 2010 (Logan Pass and Siyeh Bend).

Short traffic delays will occur above The Loop to Haystack Creek and later between Big Bend and Logan Pass

Expect one-lane directional travel through a gravel corridor and 30 minutes delays from 6 am to 10 pm. Monday night through Friday morning from 10 pm to 2 am and 2:30 am to 6 am – expect up to four-hour delays.

For updates tune your radio to 1610 AM or call 5-1-1 anywhere in Montana and select option ‘5.’

You can find more information on the Sun Road and on its reconstruction at this site.

This has to be one of the most spectacular drives in America. Amazing amount of traffic however especially with the constuction...on the positive side however it forces people to slow down and allows you to take it all in.
