Off the southeast edge of Mount Desert Island lies Baker Island, a seldom-seen corner of Acadia National Park. Stand on this island and the rugged profile of Mount Desert Island stands out sharply.

Seven miles out to sea, this small island holds one of the oldest lighthouses in the area, according to the National Park Service. Built in 1828, its first lighthouse keeper was William Gilley who had settled on Baker Island with his family some 20 years earlier.

The island today is accessible via boat with rangers who lead a short hike to the island’s eastern side where the light is located. These half-day (4.5 hours) journeys are offered from mid-June through mid-September. To reserve a ride during the season, call 207-288-2386.
