Looking back down the Chisos Basin Road on a fine spring evening, Big Bend National Park / Rebecca Latson

Spring at Big Bend National Park is a wonderful time to view cactus flowers that may be blooming. Daytime temperatures are mild and mornings are downright chilly. Yup, it's a great time to visit, but there are some things you should note when making your plans, this year.

Spring Break (March - April) is typically a very busy time of year, and this year is no exception. Currently, ALL campgrounds in the park are full, so you'll need to make camping/lodging plans outside the park.

If you are visiting during March, then be aware the park is resurfacing roads, which means you should expect road construction delays at the western entrance of the park near Study Butte, plus delays and closures at Chisos Basin Road.

The Chisos Basin road will be:

OPEN before 8:00 a.m.

CLOSED from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

OPEN from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with delays

CLOSED from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

OPEN from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with delays

OPEN from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.

The road closures apply to all visitors, including those with reservations in the Chisos Basin campground and Chisos Mountains Lodge.

Once you are in the park and ready to do a little hiking, be aware some areas are closed February 1 through May 31 to protect nesting falcons:: a portion of the East Rim Trail from the southern junction of the Boot Canyon Trail to a point just north of Campsite ER-4. This includes East Rim Campsites: ER-4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Pretty discouraged to find such limited horse trails and horse facilities. What horse camping opportunities you had were filled with non horse people. The trail heads were packed with cars dotted here and there so there was no room for a horse trailer to park. Loved the scenery and well kept common areas. All staff interactions was informative and cordial.
