Mystery Photo 60 Revealed: You're Heading For Laramie Peak!

Share

The iron arrow points to Laramie Peak roughly 100 miles west of Scotts Bluff National Monument/Kurt Repanshek

Find yourself atop the bluff known as Scotts Bluff at Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska and you'll find an iron arrow embedded in a stone wall. It points to Laramie Peak in Wyoming, some 100 miles away to the west.

They say that on a clear day you can see the peak from Scotts Bluff. That might have been true for the emigrants heading west on the Oregon and Mormon trails during the 19th century and who used the peak as a landmark in their slow journey west, but on the day I visited it was too hazy to make out the peak despite its 10,275-foot height.

I watched a video on youtube where a guy zooms in with his camera and sure enough - you can see Laramie Peak and Chimney Rock.  With the naked eye - not so much.
