Wind Cave National Park Programs Will Lead Kids Into The Backcountry

Programs for exploring nature with children and discovering the park’s backcountry will be offered this winter and spring at Wind Cave National Park.

For children ages 3 to 10, park education staff will present Adventures in Nature programs. These two-and-half-hour programs begin at the visitor center at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The first program will be on January 8 and the last on April 9. All programs are free.

The topic for the first program is “What is an animal?” Students will look at animals and learn about their differences and similarities. Join park staff as they explore the animal kingdom and learn about the creatures around us. Every program has a short outside activity, so dress for the weather.

Programs will each have a different theme and are designed with educational objectives appropriate for the age level of the student. This year’s topics revolve around life in the park and the habitats in which it lives. Program information is posted on the park's website under the Adventures in Nature link.

“These programs are designed for preschool, early elementary, and homeschooled children,” said park superintendent Vidal Davila. “This is a great way to get out of the house on a winter day and learn about the natural world around us using activities, songs, crafts, and short hikes.”

The Wind Cave Prairie Walkers, a hiking group for anyone interested in discovering seldom seen areas of the park, will continue meeting this winter at the park visitor center at 1 p.m. on the last Monday of each month. Participants will then drive to the walk’s location. Plan to be out for three to four hours and walk a couple of miles during this moderately strenuous activity. Participants should wear good walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water and snacks. The program will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
