Gros Morne Releases Moose Hunting Season Details

The moose population management program in Gros Morne National Park will open on Sept. 23 and close on Jan. 28. There are three hunting zones within the park boundary with different opening dates for each zone. A fourth zone is closed to hunting.

Gros Morne’s moose population management program began in 2011 as part of a broader initiative to improve forest health that was being significantly impacted from over-browsing. The western Newfoundland park’s moose population is managed in co-operation with the Wildlife Division of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, using the provincial big-game licensing system.

The opening dates and location for each zone are posted at trail heads, are available on the park’s website, and are included in packages sent to each hunter. They include:

• Zone 1 is open Sept. 23 to Jan. 28 and includes areas more than two kilometres (1.2 miles) away from Highways 430 and 431, excluding any Zone 2 (back of Trout River Pond), Zone 3 and Zone 4 areas.

• Zone 2 wil be open Oct. 14 to Jan. 28 and includes the area at the back of Trout River Pond, areas within two kilometres (1.2 miles) of Highways 430 and 431, excluding any Zone 3 and Zone 4 areas.

• Zone 3 will be open Nov. 13 to Jan. 28 and include areas adjacent to main park facilities and trails.

• Zone 4 is closed to hunting.

The area within one kilometre (0.6 miles) of Western Brook Bridge and route 431 in Trout River Gulch will be closed to hunting this season due to construction. Hunting is not permitted within one kilometre (0.6 miles) of any construction. Construction zones and work areas throughout the park may change daily, so be alert for closures around other construction sites. Pay attention to posted signs and call 709-458-2417 or visit the park’s website for bulletins.

During the moose hunt, some hiking trails will be impacted and visitors should pay attention to signage indicating areas where hunting is taking place. Anyone planning to visit Gros Morne this fall and winter should review maps and safety information.
