Python Challenge 2013 Results Offer Help For Florida Parks – And Bad News For Pythons

The results of Python Challenge 2013, a multi-agency effort that offered cash prizes to promote the removal of non-native Burmese pythons from the greater Everglades area in southern Florida, are now in the books. Although the end result was bad news for exotic pythons, winners included the successful hunters, scientists and parks—and three lucky snakes.

A prospective groom-to-be had a fine idea for a unique place to propose marriage to his sweetheart—the beautiful, snow-white dunes at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. The event took an unexpected turn, however, when the pair became the subjects of a search and rescue effort that includes some unusual resources.

NPS Steps In to Keep Three California State Parks Open in 2012

Budget shortfalls are expected to result in the closure of up to 70 of the 278 California state parks, but thanks to help from the National Park Service, three of those sites will get at least a one-year reprieve. Projects in a fourth state site will also receive some additional NPS support.
