Lake Ice At Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Breaks Up, Signaling Spring

Spring is in the air, and in the waters of Lake Superior, where the ice cover that made access to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore's ice caves possible has broken up.

This past winter brought the greatest flood of visitors to the Wisconsin lakeshore to explore the ice caves, which were last accessible in 2009. Park officials closed access to the caves in mid-March due to warming conditions, and on Sunday the thin layer of ice finally cave way, as the following photographs, one taken at 11:30 a.m. and the other at 1:30 p.m., clearly show.
