On September 25, Metro Atlanta area fourth grade students will camp overnight for free at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. The event is presented by the National Park Service in partnership with the Greening Youth Foundation.
“Star-lit skies, fire-pits, story time, s’mores, tents, sleeping bags and a hundred fourth graders are all necessary ingredients for what is cooking this fall,” said Superintendent Judy Forte. “The Legacy Campout is a wonderful way to kick-off the centennial celebration of the National Park Service and connect young people to the great outdoors. The event will be bigger and better than it has ever been.”
The two-day Legacy Campout begins on Friday, September 25, at 6 p.m. Themes of the campout include a celebration of the 99th birthday of the National Park Service and a kick-off to the 2016 centennial anniversary of the agency.
The campout introduces young people to icons of America's civil rights movement including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. As a signature event of Martin Luther King, Jr. N.H.S. it features interactive art activities, food and live entertainment, games, a campfire program and a community service project as part of National Public Lands Day on Saturday. Campout participants help restore and preserve the community and the environment and contribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Previous campouts have focused on middle and high school students. This year, as part of President Obama’s Every Kid in a Park initiative, the focus will be on fourth graders. The aim of the Every Kid in a Park initiative is to help get all children to visit and enjoy the outdoors and inspire a new generation of Americans to experience their country’s unrivaled public lands and waters.
This is the fifth year that Martin Luther King, Jr. N.H.S. has partnered with the Greening Youth Foundation to offer the outdoor camping experience and community service opportunity to urban youths in the metro-Atlanta area. Greening Youth Foundation is a Georgia based non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture enthusiastic and responsible environmental stewardship and healthy lifestyle choices among underserved disconnected children, youth and young adults.
