Hurricane Zeta Prompts Closures Of More National Park Units On The Gulf Coast

Hurricane Zeta was forcing more National Park System units to close in advance of the storm.

With Hurricane Zeta bearing down on the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico, more parts of the National Park System shut down to weather the storm.

In Louisiana, all six sites of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, as well as New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, closed at 4:30 p.m. CDT due to the hurricane.

The following areas were closed:

  • Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve Headquarters and French Quarter Visitor Center, 419 Decatur Street, New Orleans
  • Barataria Preserve, 6588 Barataria Boulevard, Marrero
  • Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery, 8606 West St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette
  • Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, 314 St. Mary Street, Thibodaux
  • Acadian Cultural Center, 501 Fisher Road, Lafayette
  • Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 West Park Avenue, Eunice
  • New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Headquarters (419 Decatur Street) and visitor center (916 North Peters Street), New Orleans

Elsewhere, the Okaloosa are of Gulf Islands National Seashore in Florida closed at 5 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The anticipated intense winds, rough seas, and heavy rain will impact this area and are expected to cause flooding of roads and coastal areas, a park release said.

On Monday, Gulf Islands officials closed the Davis Bayou Area and Mississippi islands including, Ship, Horn, Petit Bois, and West Petit Bois islands, as well as the NPS-owned portion of Cat Island, due to Zeta. The Perdido Key/Johnson Beach Area of the seashore in Florida also closed.

After the storm moves north of the gulf coast, it's expected to bring drenching rains into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic states.
