A solo canyoneer died of injuries she sustained in a fall of 50-to-80 feet from a side canyon that empties into The Narrows at Zion National Park/NPS file

A solo canyoneer at Zion National Park who fell 50-to-80 feet died from her injuries before she could be transported to a hospital.

The 26-year-old woman, whose name was not released by the park, was navigating Mystery Canyon, which empties into the famous Narrows section of the park. Park staff was alerted Saturday afternoon by other park visitors who had found the woman after her fall, a park release said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the woman had sustained injures consistent with a high-elevation fall.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene but was unable to extricate the woman due to the canyon's steep, narrow walls. Park medics were able to reach the woman shortly before she succumbed to her injuries. Her body was recovered Sunday evening.
