Starting October 1, 2007, the annual fall brown bear hunting season will open for three weeks in Alaska’s Katmai National Preserve. I bet you’re surprised. Brown bear hunting in a national park site?! Yep, here in Alaska national preserves are just like national parks with one exception: sport hunting is allowed. For three weeks in the Fall, hunters may take as many bears as they want.
Ahhh, the joys of an elk hunt. Roughing it in the out-of-doors, stalking through rain or snow or biting cold in the woods to find a good spot to await your prey, perhaps building a tree stand or ground blind where you might spend long hours waiting for a shot.
This little story is exactly the reason I love reading the NPS Morning Report. This is the type of entertainment that you can't make up.
If you believe the folks at Multiple Use Managers, Incorporated, some of the best hunting for Roosevelt elk and mule deer in the West can be found just off California's Pacific Coast on Santa Rosa Island.
