Cape Hatteras National Seashore Taking Another Look At Wildlife Buffers

Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials, three years removed from what seemed to be a settled approach to managing wildlife, off-road vehicles, and pedestrians on their beaches, are re-examining aspects of that plan as ordered by Congress, a request that must be complied with by mid-June.

President Obama's budget request for the 2016 fiscal year seeks $2.6 billion for the National Park Service, an increase of $55 million from current funding levels. That request seeks hundreds of millions of dollars for infrastructure needs, such as renovations to the Many Glacier Hotel in Glacier National Park and for safety, efficiency, and access upgrades to the visitor's center at Gettysburg National Military Park.

Permission Sought To Buttress Highway 12 From Ocean At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Time and again through the years storms have pushed the Atlantic Ocean up and over North Carolina 12 that runs the length of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, events that leave residents and visitors alike cut off from the mainland. Now, in an attempt to better protect the highway, North Carolina officials want to build up the beach along a section of the highway just north of Buxton.

Senate Poised To OK Legislation That Would Grow National Park System, But Questions Loom

In one of the largest expansions of the National Park System in decades, a nearly 1,700-page bill to fund the Defense Department carries amendments to add roughly a half-dozen units to the park system and add acres to others. But the measure also raises concerns over whether Congress is micro-managing National Park Service decisions when it comes to wildlife management under the Endangered Species Act, and how donors to the system should be recognized.
