An outpouring of support earned the National Park Foundation nearly $365,000 from the Lowe's Charitable and Education Foundation through a Facebook campaign.
Lowe’s and its charitable and educational arm guaranteed each of four charities $100,000, and then divided $600,000 among the four depending on the support each mustered in the on-line campaign.
The National Park Foundation received the support of 44.15 percent of those who voted in the campaign, the most received by any of the four charitable organizations. As a reward, Lowe's added $264,900 to the guaranteed $100,000 donation, boosting the foundation's award to $364,900.
The Park Foundation will use its grant to fund America’s Best Idea Grants, a program inspired by the Ken Burns film, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. The funding will also support the foundation’s Electronic Field Trips, which allow millions of school children to experience America’s national parks as virtual classrooms, learning vital topics from climate change to geology to history, through an interactive online and broadcast experience.
Runner-up to the National Park Foundation was Keep America Beautiful, which received 37.38 percent of the vote for a total grant amount $324,280.
* Water.org will receive $158,920, having won 9.82 percent of the vote.
* American Forests received 8.65 percent of the vote, making its total grant amount $151,900.
