Parks Canada Offering Free Entry To All Parks in 2017

The folks at Parks Canada are offering a great deal to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017: Your 2016 Discovery Pass will be good for 24 months.

The Discovery Passes run $136.40 for a family pass, $33.30 for youths aged 6-16, $67.60 for adults 17-64, and $57.90 for seniors 65 and older. Under this special program, any Discovery Pass bought this year will expire a full 24 months from the date of purchase (not just 12 months), so you'll still get a full year's value from a 2016 pass. It just won't expire until 2018!

Canada's national park system comprises more than 200 units. Nearly 100 charge entry fees, so the new policy applies mainly to them.

The Confederation was the process by which British colonies in the country united into the Dominion of Canada in 1867.

Compare this to the NPS's approach to celebrating their centennial by jacking up entrance fees at nearly every park, imposing extra fees for backcountry access, and seeking to increase the price and reduce the benefits of annual and senior passes. I guess I know which system really wants me to visit and which one just wants me to stay away. Canada here I come!
