Editor's note: This updates with Emmett's body being found.

The body of a man who went missing at Acadia National Park in coastal Maine was found Thursday.

Adam "AJ" Emmett's body was found between Sand Beach and Thunder Hole the park announced. The body was transferred to the medical examiner’s office and an investigation was continuing in a bid to determine the circumstances and cause of his death.

The 45-year-old Emmett, who lived near the park, left his car in the Schooner Head Overlook before a snowstorm hit the area Monday. Rangers spotted the vehicle Tuesday but were unable to find its owner.

On Wednesday, the park staff conducted a search of the area around Schooner Head and Great Head with the law enforcement and search dog teams. The Maine Warden Service and the United States Coast Guard were notified to assist with the search. “Missing Person” notices were sent to media and news outlets to determine if anyone had information related to the missing person. The Maine Warden Service is taking the lead on continued search efforts while the Park Service is handing the investigation.

On Thursday, the search involved Coast Guard boats along the shoreline and offshore and the Marine Patrol searching the area from a fixed wing airplane and Maine Warden Service dog teams.

Schooner Head provides sweeping views out into the Atlantic. Not far offshore is Egg Rock, a small island that long attracted nesting birds. A quarter-mile trail from the parking area leads down to the rocky coastline. At low tide a sea cave can be seen.

A park release described Emmett as a well-liked and respected resident.
