Cedar Breaks National Monument Officials Looking For Some Nice Wildflower Photos

Though the main attraction at Cedar Breaks National Monument is the colorful maw of the Markagunt Plateau that's on display, the monument has quite a collection of wildflowers, such as this shot of Southern Ligusticum. If you enjoy looking at wildflowers, and you're handy with a camera, you might want to enter the annual wildflower poster art contest at Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Park officials are accepting entries through the end of April. The winning photo will be used for the poster that promotes Cedar Breaks' annual Wildflower Festival, which is held in July. This year the festival is scheduled for July 2-18 and will feature wildflower walks, scavenger hunts for youngsters, and guided wildflower photography walks.

Entries will be judged by a committee comprised by botanists, college professors, members of the Cedar City Arts Council, and, of course, representatives from the national monument. Cedar Breaks is a gem of a park that is relatively unknown when compared to nearby Zion and Bryce Canyon. I have cycled through the park twice in the fall when the foliage was as colorful as the the rock formations. Guess I will have to work out a trip in the spring to see the emerging flowers.

Ray, sounds like a great plan. Just remember that "Spring" at Cedar Breaks often doesn't arrive until mid-to-late June;-)
