Reader Participation Day: What Do You Do With Your National Park Photos?

Dec 29th - 08:10am | Lee Dalton

I've tried to get into Traveler's flickr site, but failed. Any tips for a dumb bunny?

Dec 29th - 07:53am | Anonymous

Scrapbook them! (and post some on the flickr site)

Creature Feature: The American Crocodile is Florida’s Comeback Kid

Dec 29th - 08:05am | M Robertson

Very well written! Just one small detail (there's always one)...the 'Australian' croc and the Saltwater croc are one in the same, (Crocodylus porosus).** To answer the question posted by Reptiles Alive; yes, the American crocs are attracted not only to the warm water of Turkey Point, but also to the security of the location.

National Park Mystery Photo 30: Kinda Sharp Looking, Ain't They?

Dec 29th - 07:50am | Kurt Repanshek

Folks, to my surprise, we've already got a winner. But we're gonna keep it under wraps to allow others an opportunity to test their parks knowledge.

Group Claims Big Cypress National Preserve Going Too Far With ORV Access, Panther Impacts

Dec 28th - 22:33pm | CwB

I vote for NO additional ORV use ! I don't go to Big Cypress to listen to and dodge ORVs. If I want to hear that noise pollution I can stay home and listen to lawnmowers,weed-wackers and yard blowers. Big Cypress is a special place and should be managed as such, not as a playground for ATVs.

Keys Ranch Tours at Joshua Tree National Park are a Hit – Reservations Needed in 2011

Dec 28th - 21:46pm | Sabattis

I wonder if the recent edition of Keys Ranch as a stamping location for the "Passport to Your National Parks" program has helped contribute to the popularity...

Dec 28th - 18:43pm | Steve Nelson

I saw this in March, 2000. It's nice, but I never thought it would become this popular.

Christmas Gift Tryout Almost Ends in Tragedy for Amistad Kayaker

Dec 28th - 19:45pm | Ranger

Didn't mean the request for source links to be a complaint, only a suggestion. I just feel that an indication of the sources used in writing NPT articles would be a useful addition. If you don't like using in-line links, you could do something like what appears at the bottom of the page in Snopes (or Wikipedia).

Dec 28th - 17:10pm | y_p_w

I personally would hate for articles on NPT to turn into a regurgitation of other articles complete with hotlinks. Very few legitimate news sources would. Sometimes blogs primarily link to other articles. However - I do appreciate it when there is a link to an official document that might provide a decent background.

Dec 28th - 16:06pm | Bob Janiskee

Editorial policy regarding the use of source citations and hotlinks in webzine articles is something that evolves over time, Ranger. In Traveler's case, it has evolved toward fewer citations and hotlinks. Complaints like yours have been darn few and far between, so it seems that the present balance is about right.

Dec 28th - 14:47pm | Ranger

Bob, you've done a good job addressing Andy's concerns, but I would like to say that the one weakness I find in NPT stories is that they rarely link to source material (e.g. press releases) nor state the source of the information.

Dec 28th - 09:01am | Bob Janiskee

I share your frustration about the lack of details in this article, Andy-from-Arkansas. And since you brought it up, let me take this opportunity to point out a few relevant facts. I will leave it to you to decide what is weaselspeak and what is not.

Dec 28th - 08:25am | andermac

Good day all,

Dec 28th - 03:29am | AnonymousAlice

Never, never go into the outdoors on your own. Who will go for help if you have an accident? Who will stay with you? Have a party of 3 at least. Enjoy your next kayak trip and don't let this one put you off.

Record of Decision on Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV Plan OKed, But Implementation Months Away

Dec 28th - 18:44pm | Hilliard

June 29, 1940, Congress amends the enabling legislation and the words “Recreational Area” are added to further emphasize the recreational nature of the seashore as a destination for beach goers and fishermen. • On May 10, 1954, the National Park Service gave administrative permission for the staff to use the shorter name “Cape Hatteras National Seashore” in

"Whatever degradation the timber industry did by logging back in the 1600’s is long done. I don’t know of anyone who suggests that that logging had anything to do with the current (since the 10930’s) beach erosion."

Dec 28th - 08:53am | SS1

Hey Matt, SS stands for Southern Shores NC, where I’m writing. I’m not criticizing ORV proponents (or conservationist) for going to court.

Dec 27th - 08:05am | Matt Stubbs

Wow every time I see a response from SS! I think of a Dictator from Germany so long ago. "The ORV lobby has been accumulating a war chest of money. They will go to court. " Really And you seem to blame those ORV Crowd types for doing so.... I see you did not criticize the Enviros and they have done this several times!!!!

European Rabbits Facing Death Sentence at San Juan Island National Historical Park

Dec 28th - 09:33am | Jauson

This is an old issue. The general public does not understand issues at hand because they are not involved directly. Saving peter Cottontail sounds all fine and good, however that could be what early pioneers to Australia thought. You do know about what happened to Australia don't you?

Dec 27th - 09:46am | Jake Levi

I and several other rabbit enthusiasts will gladly provide housing for up to 40 of the San Juan Rabbits to preserve the strain/breed. We live in the interior , Iowa and MI. Food for thought, this is a better way to preserve them then on federal land. We can drive up and bring back a base population to establish breeding lines from.

Jennifer Pharr Davis Discusses Speed Hiking, Long-Distance Hiking, And Youth in the Outdoors

Dec 27th - 19:01pm | the Bat

I'm with Anonymous - my feeling is, if you're going to do this trek, it's worth taking your time. Over the years I've only been able to do sections of the AT - time limitations - but I do a different section every time and I'm never disappointed. Good on Ms. Pharr for her accomplishment, but I don't see any real value in trail running, or "speed hiking".

Dec 27th - 10:40am | Anonymous

I've been around and on national scenic trails for a decade and a half. I've met a lot of Celebs, as their called, and often their names become larger then the trail itself. I'm sure there is great satisfaction in all their accomplishments. I am a five time though hiker. I've taken my time when I'm out on the trail. Averaging five months.

Francis Beidler’s Long-Ago Decision Saved the Forest that Became Congaree National Park

Dec 27th - 11:17am | Tom Fetters

Amy, This is great news. I have been building a great story on the company and am in contact with Francis Beidler IV who with the Beidler Foundation here in the Chicago Area. Send me your phone number and I will call, OR call me at home at 630-629-3514. I really look forward to hearing from you. Tom

Dec 26th - 10:06am | Amy Martin

Tom, My Great, Great Grandfather was Francis Beidler's head accountant at the Santee River Cypress Company in Ferguson. I have a ton of pictures of the town when it was a thriving logging town. I also have a copy of a hand drawn map that identifies where the railroad was in Ferguson. I'd be glad to share this with you. I am on faculty at USC and live in the Columbia area.

British Columbia, Montana Officials Sign Agreement to Protect Glacier, Waterton Lakes National Parks

Dec 27th - 11:01am | Rain

I'm very happy to hear this. As for me, I've watched and read a lot about the climate change. Such videos about climate change like this one (http://www.tubesfan.com/watch/what-will-climate-change-really-do ) are really appalling. People must be blind and heartless not to see the danger of it.

A Year in the Parks

Dec 27th - 09:42am | Steve Nelson

Thanks. It's always nice when someone considers my suggestion.

Dec 27th - 08:15am | Kurt Repanshek

Steve, good suggestion about captioning. We'll look into it. Until then, from top to bottom: * Trumpeter swans on Firehole River in Yellowstone in January * Saguaro National Park in April * Formations en route to Chesler Park in Canyonlands in May * Tower of Babel in Arches in May * Grant Kohrs ranch house in July

Dec 26th - 16:55pm | Steve Nelson

Kurt, great site, generally and this article is good also. Is there any way that a caption for the picture could appear when you place the cursor on it? Although some are obvious, I can't match every picture with the park you visited. Thanks. Steve Nelson Marlborough, MA

Video: Glacier National Park's Lake McDonald on a Clear and Gorgeous Winter's Day

Dec 25th - 12:00pm | Connie Hopkins

Glacier NP is my favorite and this view makes me yearn to go back there! I'd love to see the Park in Wintertime they way we have Yellowstone. Speaking of Yellowstone: Exactly one year ago today our family spent Christmas in Yellowstone and witnessed Giantess Geyser going off all day long! Wonderful memories, love our National Parks! Merry Christmas everyone!

By the Numbers: John Muir National Historic Site

Dec 24th - 14:02pm | y_p_w

I served jury duty in Martinez once for five weeks and would drive by John Muir NHS each day. I wasn't sure what it was, since it was in a currently nondescript location next to California Highway 4. I've since visited a couple of times. The Mt Wanda walks can be pretty nice, but the parking lot (a park and ride lot on weekdays) fills up quickly.

House Republicans Say Interior Secretary's Proposed Snake Ban Bad for Business

Dec 23rd - 16:40pm | BeardedGeckoBalls

Hi. My name is Brian Beale and I am a reptile breeder in Oregon. I just want to say that I believe Banning constrictors is not a good solution to Florida's problem in the Everglades. This would be a devistating blow to all Herpers. Keepers and breeders alike. I am however, very much apposed to the gross importation off ALL reptile/animal species from their native habitats.

House Republicans Continue To Blame Environmental Regulations for Border Security Woes

Dec 23rd - 11:08am | justinh

Leave it to Rep. Bishop to provide a solution by misrepresenting the problem.

Dec 22nd - 16:08pm | Ron Saunders

Going by memory, I believe I recall in two reports now that 24 out of 26 +/_ border areas stated that fed Regs were not hindering security efforts. OK. How about those other 2. ( typical "best available science" ) If I wanted to cross the border illegally, I think I know where I'd go to do it. Or, maybe I missed something.

American Indians in the Civil War? Petersburg National Battlefield is Part of the Story

Dec 22nd - 14:56pm | Jim Burnett

Chief Bushyhead - Thanks for your comment, and I stand corrected if there is documented evidence about the Native American's fears concerning slavery if the South won the war. No offense was intended for the professional opinions of historians.

Dec 22nd - 14:38pm | Bob Janiskee

The Saginaw Chippewa tribe still exists and is federally registered. The tribe has a small reservation, the nearly 220 square-mile Isabella Indian Reservation, in Isabella County, Michigan. On that land it operates, among other things, a casino in which various Janiskees have left money behind. Part of the city of Mount Pleasant, Michigan, lies within the boundaries of the tribal lands.
