Interior Secretary Extends Temporary Withdrawal of 1 Million Acres Near Grand Canyon National Park From Uranium Mining

Jun 26th - 17:36pm | Tanya L

They have got my vote for protecting the land. I used to take trips to the Grand Canyon every summer with parents when growing up and I just took my daughter there for the first time last year. The more of it they can preserve the happier I am. Tanya

Is There A New Unit of The National Park System Coming To Your Neighborhood?

Jun 26th - 15:15pm | Anonymous

While a study is probably better than haphazard designations, Congress all too often ignores NPS recommendations.  IIRC NPS considered it unnecessary or infeasible for River Raisin and Paterson Great Falls to be part of the national park system but Congress designated them anyway.  On the flip side, the Harriet Tubman proposals, highly recommended  for park status by NPS, are still in limbo.  I

Politics Raise A Potential Roadblock to Creation Of A "Maine Woods National Park and Preserve"

Jun 26th - 15:10pm | An Individual

Follow the history of the Kolb Bros. and very recent history of the Verkamp family's business at Grand Canyon that go back over 100 years that were more a part of the cultural history of the Canyon as the National Park Service itself.  They were both forced out eventually by NPS but the buildings remain by act of Congress defeating NPS plans to completely demolish and remove Kolb Studio.

Re: Anon

Jun 26th - 02:03am | Anonymous

Michael Kellet is a former New England head of the Wilderness Society, which collaborated with NPCA and other such organizations behind the backs of Maine people and then launched a national PR campaign to overrun the state:  they pushded for Federal "Greenline" controls and national parks, taking over private property throughout about two thirds, or 10 million acres, of Maine.

Jun 26th - 00:28am | Hopeful

Mr. Kellett:Sorry, tired of the words.  Guess I don't have much hope for you, lol!  OK, I have a little.  NPS as it is, isn't the glorious savior of all things dear that you like to portray.

Jun 25th - 10:52am | Michael Kellett

Hi Hopeful, I think you're saying that you would like to see new national parks, but we can't afford them. I respectfully disagree.

Jun 24th - 10:30am | Hopeful

Re: Mr. KelletteJust seems to me and others that there are very significant challenges to the country that must be faced and breakthroughs achieved. Some help to that end would be appreciated.  The debt issue and how we look at spending is one VERY LARGE consideration.  I reside in one of our most significant parks and am blessed by it everyday.

Jun 23rd - 23:41pm | Hopeful

There's to much talk Mr. Kellett.  The country is in the ----- and all that's left is to flush.  You want the Chinese to finance another National Park?  That's real good thinking.  I long for the days AFTER 911 when we had some sense of reality, humbling and purpose.  There's a correction coming and hope we make it before it makes us and that won't be pretty but probably deserved.

Jun 23rd - 15:01pm | Michael Kellett

Dear Hopeful, I would be glad to respond, but I can't figure out what you're talking about.

Jun 22nd - 23:19pm | Hopeful

Re Michael KellettWhat a parallel universe you and your like live in.  I am respectful to a point but with Medicare on line to cease to exist in 13 years ALL of the liberal BS is just that.  There's a reality out there and the parallel universe will have a very hard row to hoe.  Well, they'll be on to the next scam or at best, delusion, but it will end BADLY if given the power.

Get real: Get real, this has been going on as long as the park has had a presence on the net. Has it ever struck you as simply egregious, that for so many years you have needed to poke around to find a date that has availability, when they could of simply told you what dates are available.

National Park Road Trip 2011: Lake Crescent Lodge, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, Log Cabin Resort in Olympic National Park

Jun 25th - 14:02pm | y_p_w

I visited a few years ago. I thought there was a shower-only fee on the fee board, but I could be mistaken.  I couldn't find it on their website, or even on their older websites (visitsolduc.com) saved on the Internet Archive.

Jun 24th - 18:29pm | Kay and David Scott

We seem to remember that the fee for day use of the pools is $12.25 for adults with a reduced price for seniors and children.  I can't remember seeing showers on the fee schedule, and am not certain a visitor can take a shower without paying for a pool visit.

Jun 24th - 13:29pm | y_p_w

I would add that the pools at Sol Duc Hot Springs can be accessed by non lodging guests for a moderate day use fee. Of course the use of the pools is included for lodging guests.

The wife and I are long day hikers who love our National Parks. We have been following your travels from day 1. We are both so jealous and sad that we are still many years away from being able to have the free time to do what you are doing. Until then we are really enjoying your rounds with you. Thanks. Will be looking foward to your book.

Hopefuly some tourists/people will not hunt this little fellow. I mean, this fox should have left when he saw you. He's not afraid of people anymore and I think this will endanger his life. Luckily, you guys are animal loving people. What if the fox encountered pouchers or hunters?

Dear Fellow Americans: I've been there and the rolling hills conjurs a stillness that brings one back to the sudden attack many years ago. Folks, many soldiers and Indians died in America's push West. We decimated the Indians over the years. No amount of gambling revenue can make up for the destruction of this great warrior nation.

It's a great place to visit.  Crowded the day I was there. The highlight of my visit was a talk in the shaded V.C. porch given by seasonal ranger Francis Takes Enemy.  Her presentation was super.

Do You Know This Grand Teton National Park Ranger?

Jun 24th - 17:40pm | Bruce W. Bytnar

Well written Bryan.  A tribute to all the hard working National Park Rangers of the past and those still out there today.  This also serves reminder to us all how our actions in just one brief moment can positively influence others.

Jun 23rd - 11:42am | Anonymous

Thank you, Bryan.  That's a fantastic description of these men and women who are there to make sure our visits are all we want them to be.  Not enough can be said for their dedication and service.  Thank you.

Jun 23rd - 08:03am | Lee Dalton

Bryan, that is just awesome!  I think WE all know who this ranger is, but your post here nailed it perfectly. Kurt, Bryan's writing needs to be headlined somewhere.  I'm going to try to forward it to the editors of EAA's Arrowhead newsletter, but it needs much wider circulation than just that.

Reader Participation Day: Have Campground Or Lodging Reservations Gotten Too Hard to Obtain In Some National Parks?

Jun 23rd - 19:19pm | S Dickson

Just want to warn people who try to use the website for "National Parks Reservations" which is not associated with the parks nor is it concessionaire of the parks.  The form asks you to fill out your top three choices of lodging for a particular park which I did.  However, I checked "any lodging" and they came back and without me being given an opportunity to confirm or decline the place they h

Jun 23rd - 06:57am | mutt

I always plan my park stays either before schools get out or after Labor Day, and I never stay in a lodge or hotel or cabin. I always in a campground for a few nights before heading into the backcountry for some real solitude. I do not always get my choice of campground, especially in Yosemite, but so far, I have been able to obtain a site someplace in the park.

Jun 22nd - 21:53pm | Mellosy

Another reason for the difficulty is that lodging esp in Yellowstone closes up about mid sept. I went to the website just now and Canyon and Grant village is closed up after 9/15. This reduces the amount of rooms that are availible for the fall. This is a prime time for those who have no children, or they are grown to go on vacation. Also it is prime time for fall colors.

Jun 22nd - 18:06pm | y_p_w

One reason for the difficulty in obtaining Yosemite campsites is the supply. I haven't heard of any other NPS campgrounds where pretty much all sites are reserved in under 10 minutes of becoming available.

Some Numbers To Keep in Mind When Reviewing Yellowstone National Park's Winter-Use Plan

Jun 23rd - 14:05pm | Mike Painter

The low Sylvan Pass numbers in Yellowstone are interesting. It's worth remembering that Yosemite leaves its eastern entrance, Tioga Pass, closed for the winter and always has. Though some folks on the east side in Lee Vining get antsy when it's not opened by Memorial Day, it's a fact of life that most people seem to accept.
